Thousands of punters turned out for Cup Day in Christchurch today, which ended in two women being taken to police cells.

A Police spokeswoman said the women were arrested on alcohol-related charges. One of the woman was 23. They were unsure of the other woman's age.

Today was the final day of NZ Cup and Show Week at Riccarton Park Racecourse.

Angela Stone of The Real Housewives of Auckland was among the large turnout, which wasn't dampened by the miserable weather.

South Island horse La Piosa won the 1000 Guineas race, while Cambridge horse Pump Up the Volume won the Christchurch Casino 153rd NZ Cup.

Police promised to crack down on intoxication at Cup Week. BYO alcohol wasn't permitted but patrons were able to buy alcohol in the carpark and bars.

Attendance was capped at 18,000 people.
