Kiwi 1,500m runner Nick Willis will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Detroit Tigers' home game against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.

Willis, who won a bronze medal at the recent Rio Olympics, will throw out the first pitch at Comerica Park for the Tigers' game against the divisional rival Twins and follow in the footsteps of many other sporting identities in being honoured that way.

The 2008 silver medallist has formed a keen interest in local sport in the Michigan area since being based there.

He broke the news of his baseball opportunity on Twitter, prompting a reply from Baseball NZ to give him some helpful hints.
