Concerns abound among national sporting organisations that the Sport New Zealand board could cut a portion of their community funding at a meeting on Thursday.
Sources told the Herald on Sunday national bodies for sports such as athletics, gym sports, hockey and snow sports could be affected by funds being reallocated into regional sport trusts, local authorities or iwi-based organisations with the aim of better targeting communities.
The fear among NSOs is any such decision could result in job losses and weaken the respective sports' influence in fostering inclusivity and talent at grassroots level.
In the last financial year, Sport NZ allocated $69.2 million in community sport funds to NSOs ($75.8 million when athlete performance support is included).
Regional sports trusts received $25.5 million, local authorities $1.35 million and iwi-based organisations $680,000.
