Michael Mason's on-off international career is back on, albeit briefly.
The Central Districts fast bowler has been called into New Zealand's squad for the ODI leg of the coming tour of Bangladesh, replacing the injured Chris Martin.
Martin, who spent the winter playing for English county Warwickshire, picked
up a niggling hamstring injury while there.
He played in Warwickshire's most recent four-day match - bowling 29.2 overs and taking three wickets in a six-wicket win over Essex last week - but New Zealand's selectors have decided on a cautious approach at the start of a long international season.
"We have come to the conclusion his longer-term interests are best served by him cutting short his obligations at Warwickshire, returning home for full treatment and rehabilitation," New Zealand general manager Lindsay Crocker said.
Martin is pencilled in to fly to Bangladesh, replacing Mason for the two tests which start on October 17, provided he is fit.
Mason, 33, has played 25 ODIs since his debut in November 2003, taking 30 wickets at 31.86 apiece.
He was on the England tour this year, but after playing in the first two ODIs - one for 62 off 10 overs, then one for 24 off two - he was discarded for the last three as New Zealand bounced back to win the series.
He played the end-of-tour matches against Ireland and Scotland, sotechnically is an incumbent in the one-day side.
Mason flies straight to Bangladesh from India where, with fellowODI squad members Jeetan Patel, Grant Elliott and Mark Gillespie,he is playing for New Zealand A.
Martin will be miffed at missing these ODIs. He was dumped for the one-day team in England, after fighting for recognition as more than merely a new ball test bowler.
A severely weakened Bangladesh - shorn of 13 players who have been red-carded after heading to the Indian Cricket League - would have been an ideal opportunity to boost his numbers and confidence.
Those squad members not in India gathered for training camps in Auckland and Christchurch yesterday.
Four players, captain Daniel Vettori, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee and Kyle Mills, had a workout at Eden Park. The squad fly to Bangladesh next Tuesday.
