Edwards said the loss had made him a better golfer.
"I've had two [losses where I should have won] so it has woken me up now. I did it in the Rotorua Open [last year] and another big tournament."
Everything Edwards did at the tournament appeared to turn to gold. He managed to set a new course record on Saturday, when he fired a slick 7-under 65 - on the new course layout. The previous record was 62 held by Danny Lee in 2007.
Edwards put his success down to good planning.
"My course management was really good and I positioned myself and gave myself the chance ... I just played one shot at a time and didn't want to get too far ahead of myself, like in the Maori Tournament."
In the women's division the Keh sisters Mun Chin, 19, and Wenyung, 15, were first and second respectively. The pair from Pakuranga were followed by Rotorua's 38-year-old Heather Lavery.
The two sisters were machine-like in their approach taking few risks but making few mistakes, while Lavery looked relaxed and appeared to be enjoying her final round but could do little to stop the roll the sisters were on.
Mun Chin said she enjoyed the tournament and was keen to return to defend her title.
She said despite playing with good consistency all weekend, she had a couple of concerns during her final round.
"There was a lot of pressure playing with my sister and Heather was sinking all her putts."
Conditions were near ideal yesterday morning with no wind and high cloud. But by mid-afternoon a north-westerly made shot selection challenging said Lavery.
"The conditions were really nice out there, it wasn't quite as sunny as [Saturday] but still thoroughly enjoyable. But in the afternoon it was actually getting quite gusty at times which was actually confusing but still very, very pleasant."
Although she could not pull back the Keh sisters, Lavery was still happy with her overall play. She will now concentrate on her next competition, the Grant Clements Tournament in Mount Maunganui on February 16.
