They say when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.

But what do they say when you run your own business? I suspect you never stop working.

Being a business owner must have its perks. You don't have to ask the boss when you want a day off and you don't have to answer to anyone about good, or bad, decisions.

But I'm sure there's plenty of downsides too. You never really finish work and if someone else suddenly doesn't show up or there's a drama to sort out, the buck stops with you.

That's why running a really good business - one that is profitable, successful and popular - is nothing to be sniffed at.

It takes hours of dedication, hours of unpaid work and hours of blood, sweat and tears.
So bravo to all those businesses who have made it onto the list published on today's page 2.

You are the finalists in the Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards and that's worth raising a glass to.

The awards are a swanky affair and this year's event, held on October 15 at the Energy Events Centre, will be no different.

It's a time for the local business community to get together, let their hair down while at the same time pat the backs of those who walk off with the trophies.

Entering the awards is quite a process. You have to impress the judges and you need to prove you are worthy winners.

Last year's overall winners, Skyline Rotorua, have done just that and continue to receive accolades for their outstanding service.

We all have our favourite spots around town whether it be a tourist attraction, a cafe or a service business.

Whoever gets to take home the iconic big wooden trophy, it's important for all locals to acknowledge good businesses.

Those on this list deserve your support.
