Olympic hopeful Tyson Sykes has won his first fight at the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers in China, with a second round TKO.
The Rotorua boxer is part of a 12-strong New Zealand team taking part at the Olympic qualifiers in Qian'an.
Sykes, 27, is competing in the light heavyweight division and needs to finish in the top three to qualify for Rio. His victory over Zakaria Ismail (Singapore) on Easter Monday has fired him into the quarterfinals for his weight division.
He will fight Turkmenistan's Aziz Achilov tonight (NZT) in China in the quarterfinals. Achilov also notched up a TKO victory in his first fight.
Tyson is trained by his father Mike Sykes and he trains out of his father's gym in Western Heights.
