Sports initiations such as the stripping incident in Rotorua involving a student from a prestigious Auckland school are in poor taste, says a local high school principal.
A senior student from the $20,000-a-year private Auckland school, St Cuthbert's, stripped down to a string bikini top and fishnet stockings on Fenton St last week as part of her football team's sports initiation.
The team was visiting Rotorua for an interschool sports tournament and as a result of the incident, the football coach for the team was fired.
Local principals told the Rotorua Daily Post they would have reacted the same way as St Cuthbert's principal Lynda Reid.
John Paul College principal Patrick Walsh said the incident "definitely got out of hand" and any sports initiations "are of poor taste".
