It was a "shocking June" for Rotorua accommodation providers, according to the local motels association.
The latest Statistics New Zealand Accommodation Survey revealed guest nights were down 10.1 per cent from June 2013 in Rotorua, from 106,760 to 96,006.
The average length of stay was 1.82 days, up from 1.76 days last year.
The survey records the number of guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks each month.
Rotorua Association of Motels chairman Barry Mabey said it was probably the worst June they had had in years, with guest numbers lower than usual for that time of year.
