Eastern Bay of Plenty police sergeant Ray Wylie is disappointed at the increased number of crashes in the region when compared to the same time last year.
Speed, alcohol and fatigue continue to be serious issues for road safety but two other factors are having a significant bearing on the number of crashes.
The first is changeable weather conditions.
During periods of dry weather, containments such as diesel and oil are often deposited on our roading network. During periods where rain and showers the roads will deteriorate and provide less traction and as a result the risk of losing control increases. Often drivers and riders blame the roads, but they have to learn to adjust their speed to mitigate the increased risks during changeable weather conditions.
High risk areas include the Waioeka gorge, Wainui Road and the Rotoma area.
