"I used to have a great job as a glass glazier for many years and and had an accident which forced me out of work with a back injury," he said.
"I fell deeper and deeper into depression and struggled with ACC and Work and Income and didn't have any money for rent or food.
"During that time I got to meet a lot of wonderful people who are not living on the streets by choice but are conditioned or their life has given them no hope.
"We want to offer Love Soup for them but this is for anybody," Mr Llewell-Christensen said.
"If they come in with a suit and tie on we'd still give them a meal. It's not our job to judge, we're not going to be judgmental on any level, we just see a need and want to help.
"We also want to complement and work within the other social services that are available to help these people," he said.
Homelessness was a growing issue in Rotorua with many young people living on the streets, Mr Llewell-Christensen said.
"Right now you do see a lot of youth around, some as young as 12. Most of them come from broken families or have parents who just don't care.
"But homeless people don't just stay in the city centre, there's some out in the east side, some like to spend their nights at the racecourse or the Government Gardens and they were squatting in rundown houses in Fordblock before the homes were condemned and they were pushed back into public places.
"Most aren't happy about their situation. People who do judge them should go and sit in the dark places they are sitting in because they're too ashamed and don't want to be seen."
Love Soup, Tokoroa is successfully running a soup kitchen once a week where 30-40 people are fed.
Co-founder Julie King said the idea started from feedback on a Facebook page which aimed to make a community stand against synthetic cannabis.
"I've helped set up 100 other pages around the country and Love Soup now have six regional committees with managers, including Rotorua, who we are helping with advice," Mrs King said.
"We've had strong support from the community with our bread donated and vegetables for the soup given from the Farmer's Market."
Love Soup, Rotorua is looking for volunteers or any business that may want to be involved. Anyone interested can join their Facebook page.
