Rotorua police used road spikes to stop a car with two men inside after they allegedly tried to evade capture, driving at speeds in excess of 100km/h in a 50km/h zone.
Rotorua police Sergeant Chris McLeod said the chase began in Collie Dr in Western Heights at 5.10pm after police tried to stop the driver for a routine breath test.
The chase was abandoned by police at the corner of Sunset and Old Taupo Rds due to safety issues and the driver hit another car on Pukuatua St before heading east toward Ngapuna.
Mr McLeod said road spikes were used to stop the driver on Vaughan Rd where the man lost control and hit a lamp post before he and his passenger allegedly tried to run off.
The passenger was quickly caught while the police were still looking for the driver.
