The man found seriously injured near a rail crossing in Tauranga today is now in a critical condition in hospital.
The man was thought to be in his mid-30s, a Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile, police have found nothing that would indicate the man had been hit by a train, but have not ruled that possibility out, a police spokeswoman said.
Police were working to identify the man and believed they were following good leads.
Police and ambulance staff were called to the rail crossing at Maxwells Rd in Otumoetai about 7.35pm.
