Two teenage brothers will make a court appearance todayafter they were nabbed by police allegedly breaking into cars at a central city carpark in Whangarei.
It's a strong warning to car owners to hide any valuables left in vehicles and ensure vehicles were locked, police say.
An alert member of the public rang police after they spotted the duo in the public carpark leading to the Canopy Bridge in the Town basin about 9.40am yesterday. The person on the phone was able to keep police up to date with the men's movements until officers arrived only minutes later.
Sergeant Claire Carter said one of the brothers was allegedly discovered in a car by police, while the other was found near by. Nothing had been taken but it served as a warning to hide all valuables.
"Don't leave anything of value visible. That includes label shoes and even coins ... out of sight, out of mind," she said.
