Fire Service northern communications shift manager Scott Osmond said the house in Barrack Rd, Mt Wellington was engulfed by flames.
Four crews were now at the scene of the fire in the single-storey home and garage after the alarm was raised around 11.25am.
He said no one was believed to be inside.
Eyewitnesses report seeing thick black smoke billowing from the burning property kilometres away.
Those close to the fire said flames were leaping up to three storeys high at the height of the blaze.
Police had cordoned off a section of the road between Bertrand Rd and the Panmure Highway.
