4:22pm: A 75-year-old man has been airlifted to Waikato hospital after a crash which has closed State Highway 2.
Two other people have been taken to Tauranga hospital by St John with serious injuries.
The crash took place on State Highway 2 outside the Seeka Coolstore near Wharawhara Rd.
A police officer at the scene said a man heading towards Katikati performed a u-turn and collided with a car which was also heading towards Katikati.
The man then spun out and crashed through a fence and into two cars parked in the Seeka Coolstore carpark.
All three of the injured people were in the same car.
3.54pm: One person is critically injured and two others have serious injures after a crash on State Highway 2 near Katikati.
All three people have been freed from their cars and a rescue helicopter is on scene to transport them, fire service spokesman Scott Osmond said.
A police spokesman said the road was closed and diversions were in place through Tetley Rd and Marshall Rd.
EARLIER: Two people are trapped after a crash on State Highway 2 near Katikati.
A fire service spokesman said three people were injured in a two-car crash on the highway near Wharawhara Rd, outside the Seeka Coolstore.
Two people were trapped in one of the cars.
A rescue helicopter has been called to the scene.
A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene about 2.55pm.
Initial reports were that a car had gone through a fence, he said.
Delays were likely for motorists heading through the area.
