Two people were injured, one seriously, in a motorcycle crash in Waikato this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the intersection of Storey Rd and Waiu Rd, near Waiterimu, at 5.47pm, a police spokesman said.

One person was seriously injured and another suffered moderate injuries.

It was not clear whether both patients had been riding on the motorcycle, or whether another vehicle was involved. However, nothing in the police's logs made any mention of another vehicle, the spokesman said.

The Philips Search & Rescue Trust said in a statement that a 49-year-old Piopio man was seriously injured when his bike left the road and crashed into a paddock.

He suffered multiple serious internal injures.

He was treated by a St John Ambulance paramedic at the scene before being flown to Waikato Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman was unable to provide an update on his condition this evening as he was still being treated in the emergency department.

The police serious crash unit is investigating.
