A man has fled to the safety of a police station after saying another man tried to abduct him tonight.

A police spokeswoman said the man told police he accepted a ride from a "friendly looking" man.

"The informant has said that the guy then refused to let him get out of the car."

However, he managed to escape and run to the Helensville Police Station on Rimu St at about 8.15pm.

The man was currently speaking with police, and the spokeswoman said more details would not be known until after that had taken place.
