Police are asking motorists to avoid the intersection of Kerwyn Ave and Ra Ora Dr in East Tamaki following a crash between a car and a van.

One person received moderate injuries in the crash shortly after 4pm and had been taken to Middlemore Hospital, a St John spokesman said.

Fire service said the man had been trapped in his vehicle and had since been extracted by emergency services.

Police spokeswoman Shelley Nahr said police were advising motorists to avoid the area while debris was still on the road.

Emergency services were still in the process of clearing the site at 5pm.
