One cow is dead after a car collided with loose cattle on a Northland road earlier tonight.

A fire spokeswoman said the car involved caught fire after hitting the animal on State Highway 14 in Tangiteroria just before 9.30pm.

She had been told only one cow died but several had been loose on the road at the time of the accident.

She was unable to say if any more of the herd were hit.

Fire services extinguished the car, which was completely ablaze, and the person inside was able to get out without suffering any significant injuries.

Police also attended the incident.
