A 15-year-old mountain biker was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter yesterday.

The boy had come off his bike and sustained injuries while riding in the Maitai Valley's Sharlans Creek area, on the Kaka track.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to the incident at 11.30am.

The crew winched the teen out of the area and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital.
