Police rescue a hiker on Mt Tongariro, and hundreds of people in a small community go searching for a missing girl minutes after it was posted on Facebook. These are just two of the stories making headlines around the regions today.

Police rescued a solo hiker from a precarious position on Mt Tongariro after they slipped on ice yesterday afternoon.

Within minutes of a Facebook post about a missing girl in Kaikohe locals were out in their cars searching every nook and cranny of the town, eventually finding the young girl.

Ministers were out and about strolling the streets of Havelock North yesterday to see how the community was coping as it continues to deal with an outbreak of gastro.
