A gastro virus has broken out at a Greymouth hospital.

Entry to Grey Base Hospital is restricted after some patients and staff have experienced diarrhoea and vomiting.

Hospital spokeswoman Dr Vicki Robertson said visitors are being asked to refrain from visiting patients in the hospital's Morice Ward until further notice.

Staff have been asked to stay home if they are sick, and to ensure they have been symptom-free for at least two days before returning to work.

Isolation precautions are in place in the ward, and the DHB asks that people refrain from visiting the hospital if they are feeling sick.
