A large beam of light is shooting high into the Auckland sky tonight.

The ray is coming from the top of the ANZ tower on Lower Albert St.

There are clear skies above Auckland and the beam is visible across the city.

Passersby spoken to by the Herald were mystified about the reason for the light.

Scott Davis said he had no idea what the light was. It looked light some kind of searchlight but wasn't moving.

Herald reader Fran Watts speculated that the beam was "something to do with the Olympics".
