Firefighters pull man from burning car in Christchurch

Firefighters have been applauded for their efforts to get a man out of a burning car in Christchurch late last night.

The Fire Service was called out to reports of a car crash on Hussey Road, in Harewood, just after 11pm.

When firefighters arrived, the car was well ablaze and a man was trapped inside.

Southern fire communications shift manager, Brent Dunn, said the crew managed to save the man -- all the while the car was on fire.

Mr Dunn praised their "brave" efforts.

"The car was well ablaze and it was a fantastic effort from the fire crews."

The man suffered serious injuries and is recovering in Christchurch Hospital.
