A man has been arrested after allegedly following a woman into a central Auckland apartment complex and sexually assaulting her.
Police said the man "tail-gated" the woman into the Queen St apartment building about 5am on Thursday.
After interacting with the offender, the woman entered her apartment. Police say the offender then gained access to her apartment and only fled when she alerted her flatmate a short time later.
A 22-year-old man has been charged with burglary and sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection. He was due to appear in Auckland District Court today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin said yesterday that people living in apartments in the city should be aware of "tail-gaters" -- people entering apartment buildings behind others without the appropriate access cards or keys.
