A man is likely to face charges after a police were called to an incident involving an air pistol in Waikouaiti.
Senior Sergeant James Ure, of Dunedin, said a man received a welt to his abdomen following the incident at 2pm. The injury was not thought to be serious.
However, police from Palmerston, Oamaru and Dunedin were called, and officers spoke to the man believed to be responsible.
Sgt Ure said police were taking the incident seriously, as air guns could be potentially dangerous weapons.
Sgt Don Wilkinson died after he was shot with a FX Monsoon air gun while on a undercover drugs operation in Auckland in 2008.
