Taupo Police are seeking witnesses after a man was knocked unconscious in a seemingly unprovoked attack early on New Year's Day.

A group of revelers near the lake front had stopped to speak to another group at around 3am next to a parking area known as the Pits.

A 20-year-old Wellington man was punched and knocked unconscious.

He was hospitalised with a head injury and is recovering at home.

Police say a group congregated around a parked white vehicle around the time of the assault - they believe someone will have witnessed the assault or will have information that might help identify the offender.
