"She has expressed some concerns about some wellbeing and safety issues, but whether there is any grounds for those concerns is something we are looking into," she said.

"She is still missing and we are anxious to hear from her or anybody that knows where she is."

Police said on Monday there was a possibility Ms Cross has travelled to Dunedin, and could be using her maiden name Kara.

She is described as a European, about 5' 7" (174cm) tall.

"She is of skinny build with long black hair which she usually wears down. Police have been advised that she may have cut her hair."

"Anyone sighting Sharon should immediately contact police on 111."
