Firefighters undertook a "delicate operation" at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital to liberate a man's penis from a steel ring this morning.
A fire spokesman said hospital staff had asked for a crew to go to the hospital's emergency department at around nine to help remove the ring that had encircled the man's private part.
He said a dremel tool, a type of power grinder, was used to remove the stainless steel ring.
"If you look at that, you can see it required a delicate operation."
Despite the seemingly bizarre nature of the incident, the fire spokesman said it was not that uncommon an occurrence.
