About 30 protesters are standing outside the Australian consulate in Auckland brandishing signs stating "No human is illegal".
The protest is against the situation on Christmas Island.
Members of Global Peace and Justice and Socialist Aotearoa are among the crowd.
Other signs say "Close Christmas Island now" and "Refugee crisis - Time for NZ to step up".
The crowd has started chanting: "Stand up fight back".
The group joined together to chant: "Shame, shame, shame".
One woman read out a statement from Labour corrections spokesman Kelvin Davis, stating the Christmas Island riots kicked off because of a "build up of fear, anger and frustration at a system that is broken".
"A strong prime minister could have made a difference, and the Christmas Island riot could have been avoided," the statement said.
A spray-painted sign satchel to the consulate says: "No borders, no nations, stop deportations".
A number of the protestors have stormed the consulate, charging up the escalators.
Two police officers chased them up upstairs.
The group are shouting: "Free, free, free the refugees" and "Say it loud say it clear the refugees are under attack".

Security guards have told the protestors to leave the building - but they made sure to chant on their way out.

Protestor Sunny Sehgal said it was about speaking up.
"The reason for us taking part is to show solidarity for all the refugees on Christmas Island. To give the message you're not alone.
"We want to put some pressure on our prone minister so he can wake up and do something about it."
Another protestor taking part, who wanted to be known only as Keith, said it was almost history repeating.
"Basically we are here for the same reason as New Zealand troops who went to war in two world wars - to fight oppression.
"So much for the Anzac spirit."
Members were seen performing a haka as pallbearers carried his coffin into the clubhouse.
