Fog blanketing parts of Auckland is unlikely to clear before commuters travel home from work this evening.
Fog has shrouded parts of the city today, and little winds and light rain has done nothing to help the situation.
MetService meteorologist Rebekah LaBar said motorists would need to take care this evening.
"Aside from a few showers coming in in a couple of hours time there's not a lot coming that will help move that fog out," she said.
"Even if it's not foggy patches on the journey home its definitely not the greatest visibility so my advice for people is to take it easy on your journey home."
New Zealand Transport Agency had warned Auckland motorists to watch their following distances while driving in fog.
Northern Police Communications didn't report an increase number of crashes on roads around Auckland.
Winds will turn northwesterly across the city, but wouldn't be strong enough to shift the "soup-like" conditions away, Ms LaBar said.
The fog hadn't caused any delays or cancellations at Auckland Airport, a spokeswoman said.
The dreary conditions in Auckland would turn to rain overnight and showers tomorrow.
"There's some little showers expected to get heavier tonight and overnight," Ms LaBar said.
MetService issued a warning for rain to be getting heavier in eastern Bay of Plenty until the early hours of tomorrow morning.
MetService warned 90mm to 120mm could accumulate about the ranges and 40mm to 60mm expected about north-facing coasts.
Thunderstorms were possible this evening, Ms LaBar said.
"There's a cluster of showers between Whakatane and Rotorua now that will be easing off later today."
The rain today hadn't been falling in significant intensities, Ms LaBar said.
