Searchers are yet to locate a 79-year-old fisherman, missing off the Kaikoura coast after a boat he was in capsized this morning.
A 74-year-old man was also on the boat was found dead on the shoreline about 200 metres from the 16-foot vessel.
A police spokesman said at 8.30pm that the search would be called off for the night shortly and would resume about 6am tomorrow.
The operation had involved more than 20 people, boats, a plane and a helicopter. The police dive squad was also expected to join the search.
Police and the Coastguard were alerted shortly after 9am that a boat had capsized near Kaikoura.
The two men had set off in the boat at 7am to check crayfish pots. Around 8.15am another boat found their semi-submerged vessel in Whaler's Bay.
The dead man was wearing a lifejacket, but it had not been inflated, police said.
The men's boat had been towed to shore and would be examined by police investigators and Maritime New Zealand.
