Police are appealing for help as they investigate the death of a man in Rangiora on Friday night.

Officers were called to a house in White Street property at around 9:30pm, where they found the dead man and his injured brother, both in their 50s.

Detective Inspector Dave Long won't speculate on the nature of the man's injuries.

He wants to locate a silver Subaru station wagon, which was seen driving erratically on Lineside road at about 9:45pm, before it was abandoned near the Ohoka Road off ramp.

"There are no definite lines on inquiry other than the vehicle...or suspects at this stage. so it's a very open-ended inquiry and we would appreciate assistance from the public if they have any information about this matter.

"There's about 25 staff working on the investigation and a scene examination is being conducted with the assistance of ESR."
