An elderly man was killed when his car slammed into a barrier and another car on Auckland's northwestern motorway this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the west-bound Lincoln Road off-ramp at 2.12pm.

Police said a car had collided with the barrier and a second car.

The elderly driver, who was first the car's sole occupant, died in the collision. Two occupants of the other vehicle were unhurt.

The police serious crash unit is investigating, and police said it was too soon to say what caused the crash.

Police said the incident caused significant delays to motorists, but the wreckage had since been cleared. The off-ramp reopened to traffic just after 5pm.

Police were still trying to notify the dead man's family.
