A man is in a moderate condition after a fire in an Auckland City apartment this morning.

Fire Service Northern Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said crews were called to the blaze in a level five apartment in the Guardian building on Queen Street about 5am.

The building's sprinkler system and a hose reel extinguished the fire.

Mr Phillips said a man suffered smoke inhalation and has been taken to Auckland Hospital in a moderate condition.
