A woman has been charged with attempted murder after a 30-year-old woman suffered stab wounds in Nelson yesterday.

A 57-year-old man died from stab wounds as a result of the same incident.

A woman, 59, has been remanded in custody for psychiatric assessment, police said.

She was granted name suppression and was due to appear in court later this month.

The injured woman was in a stable condition in Nelson Hospital.

Police were continuing to investigate the death of the man, and no charges had yet been laid over it, police said.

Emergency services were called to the St Ann Street property about 10.45am yesterday, where they found the man and woman with knife wounds.

Police were not seeking anyone else in relation to the matter.
