One man has been arrested after an apparent armed abduction in the Far North early this morning.

Witnesses alerted the police after a man, allegedly armed with a pistol and possessing a rifle, was seen assaulting two males and then forcing them into a van at 6:45am near Takahue, south of Kaitaia.

The two men were then driven south down State Highway One.

The victims managed to escape the van after their captor stopped the vehicle and walked behind it toward a car that had been following them

Police were able to identify the alleged offender and a nearby address was cordoned off and phone contact established with him.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called out, but local officers were able to arrest the man without incident prior to their arrival.

A 47-year-old Kaitaia man now faces a number of firearms charges relating to the event.

The victims were later found driving south of Whangärei towards Auckland.
