Police have released the name of a cyclist killed yesterday when he and a cycling partner were hit by a car on a busy road in Tauranga.

He was David Peter Armstrong, 50, from Bethlehem, Tauranga.

Mr Armstrong was hit as he was travelling with a female cyclist on State Highway 36 at Pyes Pa.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after midday but he died of his injuries soon after.

The woman was rushed to Tauranga Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and discharged later in the afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Robert Glencross said initial indications were that speed and the manner of driving were factors in the crash.

Weather and road conditions did not appear to have been played a part.
