Children allegedly left in car while mother partied

A woman was arrested yesterday after allegedly leaving her five-year-old son and three-week-old baby asleep in a car while she drank for more than four hours at a house down the road.

The 26-year-old mother was taken into custody and will appear in the Manukau District Court on two charges of abandoning a child under six.

Police were called to a Wiri address at 8.15pm, where they found the children sleeping in a parked car in the driveway.

Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini alleged their mother was found in an "extremely intoxicated" state at a party about 50 metres along the street where she had been drinking since 3.30pm.

Child Youth and Family were called in and will work with whanau to arrange ongoing care.The children were found to be in good health and were placed under the care of a foster family last night.

Sergeant Pizzini credited concerned neighbours who alerted police to the situation.
