Police today named a young man killed when his car crashed in Tauranga yesterday.
He was Blaze Kawau, 21, of Tauranga.
Police said Mr Kawau died when his car hit a street sign after colliding with another at the intersection of Fraser Street and Fifteenth Avenue about 8.20pm.
His female
passenger received serious injuries, while the driver of the other car escaped injury.
Mr Kawau was one of four people to die on the nation's roads during the weekend.
Nicolas Agius had his life support switched off in Auckland Hospital last night after smashing his car into a power pole in the inner city at 8.50am yesterday.
Witnesses said that Mr Agius, 28, who had been partying with friends, drove his Toyota stationwagon on the wrong side of the road in Symonds St before the crash.
His mother told the Herald on Sunday she believed he had been driving to get food and may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
An 80-year-old man died in Rotorua Hospital last night following a head-on crash between two vehicles on the western shore of Lake Taupo yesterday afternoon.
The man, a woman and her five-year-old son, were all airlifted to hospital.
Police said the woman and boy suffered moderate to serious injuries.
A man, believed to be in his late 40s, died following a head-on crash at Mauku, 10km west of Pukekohe, last night.
Police said the accident happened on a railway overbridge on Union Road about 9.20pm.
The man, who was local, died at the scene.
Two others were taken to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries while a fourth person escaped with less serious injuries.
