The fear of an overly ambitious skater flying out in front of a car has triggered a redesign of the new skatepark at Onerahi.
Whangarei District Council parks and recreation manager Paul McDonald said the modification was "no biggie" and involved the removal of the "hump" nearest to the footpath on Onerahi Rd.
The council had received complaints of young skaters trying to make the leap from the ramp on to the footpath, with concern they would overshoot and go in front of a car.
"Basically it's getting misused or just used in the wrong way. The kids themselves don't feel it's unsafe," Mr McDonald said.
"We can't stop the enthusiasm, which is great, but we want to make sure everyone is safe."
