The Tibetan community in Whangarei will join a relay to raise awareness about human rights struggles and living conditions in Tibet.
A torch dubbed the "Flame of Truth" now travelling the world will arrive in Whangarei on Thursday and will be taken from the Town Basin to the Old Town Hall later that afternoon.
Tenzin Thupwang, spokesman for Northland Tibetans, said there would be guest speakers and Tibetan food and exhibitions after the march, scheduled from 5-5.30pm. Signatures would be collected and presented to the United Nations on World Human Rights Day on December 10.
Since 2008, Chinese security forces had been suppressing the Tibetan people's protests with violence, torture and imprisonment and the situation was getting worse each day, Mr Thupwang said.
Signatures will also be collected at the Farmers' Market in Whangarei on Saturday.
