The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is considering more legal action to forestall a strike by meat works veterinarians from Friday.
However, the eleventh-hour bid will not stop most of the country's export meat works closing tomorrow, putting thousands of meat workers out of work with no pay.
The plants have to halt killing even before the strike begins, because the vets are needed to certify meat cutting processes following slaughter.
MAF said today it is unlikely to appeal an Employment Court decision which cleared the way to strike by the vets, who certify meat for export.
But on advice from the Crown Law Office it is considering taking action in the Employment Court alleging a breach of faith by the vets' National Union of Public Employees (Nupe).
