When you win the $A3 million Melbourne Cup with a horse named Brew, the opportunities to shout are endless.
The five owners of last month's cup winner are opening their shoulders in increments of 24 minutes at Ellerslie races on Sunday when Steinlager beer will be given away.
For 24 minutes at 3 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm racegoers will be invited to have a shout on the owners of Brew.
Brew is from a family of drinkers. Or at least drinks.
Brew's owners had been keen to share their luck with punters and have struck a deal with the Auckland Racing Club and New Zealand Breweries.
"This will be an opportunity to see the Melbourne Cup and have a beer on us," said part-owner Gerard Peterson.
Peterson and two fellow owners, Paul Moroney and Phil Lindberg, will be missing from Ellerslie on Sunday.
They are shareholders in Brew's stablemate Second Coming, who is running in the $2.65 million Hong Kong Vase about the time Ellerslie patrons will be whistling through their third 24 minutes of Steinlager.
The two remaining owners Craig Lindberg and Berry Schroder will be at Ellerslie with the Melbourne Cup.
"For those who get hungry when they have a drink we are giving away Mad Butcher sausages," said ARC chief executive David Lloyd.
Sunday's $30,000 Mercedes Derby Trial meeting starts at 2.55 pm and goes through to 7.55 pm, taking live feeds from the Hong Kong International meeting which includes Sunline's attempt on the $2.65 million Hong Kong Mile.
"This is the one day of the year we allow cars onto the lawn area in front of the grandstands are barbecues are welcome," said Lloyd.
Course entry is free and there will be Cantonese commentaries.
