DURBAN - Josh Kronfeld is enjoying rugby so much that he wants to tour France and Italy with the All Blacks in November and perhaps continue his illustrious career in New Zealand next season.
His New Zealand Rugby Football Union contract expired yesterday, but he said that he had softened on an earlier decision to quit international rugby this year.
"I want to go to France, provided I can carry on performing through the NPC. That's what I want to do," he said. "I've been having a great time [in test rugby]. I've definitely softened on the idea [of quitting]."
Set to become New Zealand's most-capped flanker tomorrow's Tri-Nations clash at Johannesburg, Kronfeld said he has yet to make a clearcut decision about his future, which was why he had not sought an extension to his NZRFU contract.
But talks about another possible contract had started with the union, he confirmed. His inspiration this year was reaching 50 tests, which he had done.
And in the Tri-Nations match against the Springboks at Johannesburg, Kronfeld, aged 29, will become the most-capped New Zealand flanker, overtaking Michael Jones' 53 tests.
"I was definitely finishing up today, but I haven't," he said. "I'm now wanting to be involved with the French tests. I haven't made any definite plans beyond that, and that's the truth."
He said he was embarrassed by a report in New Zealand earlier this week that he was quitting international rugby after tomorrow's match, but would tour France and Italy if he was required and end his test career there.
"I really feel embarrassed about that. I really do and I apologise because it's caused a bit of ruckus."
