Yesterday's downpour kept fire and ambulance services busy as basements flooded, fire alarms went off and drivers battled slippery conditions.
Fire Service spokesman Scott Osmond said five incidents of flooding were reported in basements and buildings around the city while some 20 fire alarms were triggered by water leaking into wiring systems.
St John Ambulance control room supervisor Patrick Berry said over 30 minor road accidents were reported yesterday - twice as many as usual.
Weatherwise Auckland coordinator Carla Salinger reported heavy rain, particularly in central and eastern Auckland.
Around 60mm has fallen in Freemans Bay over the past two days, half the area's average monthly rainfall.
"Auckland hasn't experienced many substantial downpours of late. A feature of this autumn has been long, dry spells with just two or three very rainy days for each month," Mrs Salinger said.
But Aucklanders should keep their umbrellas handy for the rest of the week.
MetService weather ambassador Bob McDavitt said further thunderstorms and heavy showers are being forecast for Thursday and Saturday.
