What is it?

Subaru's facelifted Outback in $69,990 top-spec 3.6R format with the 191kW/350Nm 3.6-litre engine and "Eyesight" safety tech. Twin cameras fit the windscreen to help drivers avoid or reduce impact in an imminent collision, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control that automatically slows if the car in front is driving at under the set speed.

We like

Practical and spacious, Outback now comes with Euro levels of safety tech plus satnav and reversing camera, and S-drive settings to choose frugal, sporty or hooligan modes.

We loathe

Poor fuel economy, we averaged 12l/100km on our hilly commute tackled in eco and hoon modes.
