If you have seen one of Ruby Frost's music videos, you'll know that this is one pop star with a penchant for dressing up and wearing sparkly things - not an entirely rare thing in the age of Lady Gaga, but relatively unique in the New Zealand music scene where musicians often favour a much more low-key look.

Her quirky, often D.I.Y style reflects that of her music: Frost, real name Jane de Jong, creates synth-pop sounds with an intergalactic bent - her most recent single, Odyssey, features a video where her face is painted silver and she wears a black sparkly bodysuit with the Jeffery Campbell boots she's wearing here (painted with glitter by stylist Zara Mirkin).

She tells us more about her fun take on style, which she describes as "Japanese wannabe, playing dress-ups".

Personal style quirk?
Must have sparkles.

When I'm on stage, I like to wear ...
D.I.Y costumes of sequins, capes, and peacock-feather crowns ...

When I'm off stage, I like to wear ...
Patterned pants. I've been collecting them; my favourites are covered in the American flag, from an opshop in LA.

What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A giant white fur cape from Savemart. Straight from Cruella De Ville's wardrobe.

How would your friend describe your style?
They'd pick out the tackiest thing in a shop and say "that's you".

Your favourite shop?
When I'm overseas I hunt down American Apparel. They have amazingly tacky stage clothes.

Your best beauty tip?
Bedazzle everything.

How do you define "fashionable", what does it mean to you?
Doing your own thing. Not bothering with "trends".

Who are your favourite designers?
Opening Ceremony make the best shoes. And my friend Bevin Paye, who's making jumpsuits for me.

Is there anything you'd never wear?
A Slipknot mask.

Favourite fashion-y movie, or fashion moment in film?
I love Winona Ryder in Edward Scissorhands. And the Childlike Empress of Fantasia in The Neverending Story.

Dress to impress whom?
Ziggy Stardust.

Who is your ultimate fashion plate?
Bowie. Bjork. And Yoko when she was with John.

Describe the best outfit you've ever worn.
An 80s Japanese wedding dress.

What's in your handbag?
Liquid eyeliner and a lipstick ... and usually a moleskin diary, gum, guitar picks, 100 loose receipts, three lip glosses, keys, safety pins ...

Currently on repeat on your iPod?
Nico's album Chelsea Girl; the songs were written by Lou Reed and Dylan.

What one item from your wardrobe do you put on and immediately feel great in?
My Jeffrey Campbell boots, painted in glitter.

Who or what inspires your style?
Lots of themes: Tokyo, royalty, brides, animals, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 1970s and Stevie Nicks' gypsy vibe.
