Clogs: Shoe of the season or sign of a fashion victim?

I've seen a few clogs in shops recently, the trickle down effect from their appearances on the runways at Chanel and Louis Vuitton in October last year.

We all scoffed and chuckled then, dismissing them as ugly and awkward - or in the case of Style.com, declaring the Chanel clogs as ok ... but only because Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld says they're ok (an attitude that confirms the fact that yes, fashion people are lemmings).

I think they're, well, ugly, but I've also had a thing for ugly shoes for a very long time.

I wore clogs back in primary school, and owned a few pairs actually - my favourite being a tan suede pair that would be considered oh so hip now, more than 10 years later.

I'm not the only one with a penchant for ugly shoes: there's a certain demographic - Chloe loving, Lula magazine-reading girls - that has long had a love affair with clompy, dowdy footwear. There was a stage in 2006 where the fashion world went gaga for Chloe's orthopedic looking shoes.

British It girl Alexa Chung is the current patron saint of style for this group, and funnily enough she also loves clogs - she appeared on the March cover of British Vogue wearing the Chanel versions, and just this week The Telegraph pronounced her "Queen of the Cloggies".

The lesson learnt here?

Fashion loves ugly shoes - except when they're called Crocs.

I tried on a pair of Funkis clogs yesterday, a brand that is available at Ruby Boutique. And call me a fashion victim, but I kind of liked them.

But that's probably just because Karl Lagerfeld says wearing clogs is ok.
